Meat Industry Survey on 2D Barcode Current Knowledge and Possible Usage

Over the last few years, two dimensional (2D) barcodes have gained popularity. 2D barcodes are not new, they have been available since the late 1980s. There are many different types of 2D barcodes used for many different purposes.

One of the most common 2D barcodes is the Quick Response (QR) code, this is often used for marketing and consumer information as the QR code can include a link to a website. There are many retail products with QR codes.

In contrast, retailers have increasingly adopted the the GS1 DataMatrix 2D barcode for product scanning at POS. The GS1 DataMatrix barcode can store significantly more information than the traditional retail 1D barcodes. This enhanced capacity allows retailers to include vital data such weights, expiry dates, prices, date based discounts and other POS related information.

This simple survey is intended to determine:

  1. The current level of meat industry understanding about 2D barcodes,
  2. Any current usage of 2D barcodes, and
  3. Possible future use of 2D barcodes.
Completing this 5 minute survey provides an opportunity for you to help shape Meat Industry policy related to 2D barcodes and determine the need for Meat Industry technical standards on 2D barcodes.

This survey is being conducted by the Red Meat Supply Chain Committee (RMSCC) which reports to the Australian Meat Industry Language and Standards Committee(AMILSC) on industry program and project activities related to information standards along the red meat supply chain.
